The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
