The English and Welsh Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish and the Scots also share a group once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
