Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
