Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
