RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
